Researchers at the National University of Singapore in Nanometer Science and Nanotechnology have recently created a unique membrane that they advertise as the world's first energy storage membrane. This film is very soft and foldable. Can store more energy.

This membrane is made of a polymer consisting of high-molecular polystyrene. Completely friendly to the environment. The film is sandwiched between two metal plates to form a new supercapacitor. Charged through a metal plate, it can store 0.2 Farad capacity per square centimeter of film. In contrast, one square centimeter of standard capacitance can only store up to 1 microfarad capacitance.

Most notably, the cost of this kind of membrane is very low. Using current technology based on liquid electrolytes, the cost of storing a Faradic capacitor is $7. With this membrane, the cost can be reduced to 0.62 US dollars. For example, the cost of advanced lithium batteries is about 2.5WH/USD, and the cost of such energy storage films is only 10-20WH/USD.

Dr. Xie Xian Ning, the chief expert of the study, stated that the detailed technical specifications of the material have not yet been officially released. But he can say with certainty: The performance of this kind of membrane far exceeds the current lithium battery and lead-acid battery and traditional electric capacity.

The study was conducted with the support of the “Singapore-MIT Joint Research and Technology Project”. At the same time, it also received support from the National Research Fund. Dr. Xie and his team began researching this technology early last year and reached the current level a year and a half later. At present, this technology has obtained US patents for technological innovation. Potential applications for this technology include the field of electric vehicles and solar and wind energy storage.

The R&D team is currently looking for venture capital or cooperation opportunities to commercialize the technology as soon as possible.
