British students find ways to use recycled coffee grounds for renewable fuels and biodiesel

According to the British "Daily Telegraph" report, Arthur Kay, a student at the Department of Architecture at the University of London in the United Kingdom, stumbled upon the use of discarded coffee grounds for making renewable fuels and biodiesel. Since then, he has created a company called "Bio Beans" that collects coffee and coffee grounds from coffee shops, coffee bean retailers, airports, and coffee factories, and converts them into biofuels.

As a young entrepreneur, Arthur Kay is confident in his coffee residue conversion technology. He pointed out that used coffee grounds can now be turned into a cheap renewable fuel. The solid fuel “coffee briquettes” can even be used directly on wood-burning boilers, but the price is only half the price of charcoal. .

During the production process, the technology used by BioBeans is a completely new hybrid technology. According to Arthur Kay, the collected coffee grounds first need to be dried before they can be processed using proprietary technology. The oil refining process is essentially a biochemical process. The scientific name is “hexane extraction,” which uses n-hexane as a solvent to extract oil from coffee grounds. On a weight basis, 15% to 20% of liquid fuel and 80% to 85% of solid biomass fuel can be obtained after extraction. The latter is made into "coffee briquettes" and burns more calories than wood, less than coal. 99.9% of the n-hexane solvent can also be recovered, which means that it can be used repeatedly to make the refining process greener.

Although coffee grounds have been used once, they still emit aromas after high-temperature refining. This is annoying to many users because they don't want their home to smell like Starbucks. For this reason, "Bio-bean" company de-oiled the fuel to remove the taste of the coffee briquettes.

Today, BioBeans has reached an agreement with some large corporate customers to launch the first consumer product. Arthur Kay believes that the sale of coffee grounds fuel requires a unique sales philosophy. If no one ever has emotional attachment to fuel, then “Bio Beans” company will create this special feeling and let more and more Consumers love this new fuel.

The current major selling point of the product is its low cost. In addition, there are many interesting activities to be linked with it, such as using coffee briquettes to bake vegetables or barbecues. Last summer, "Biological Beans" company has begun to start pre-sales and marketing work, but because it is a start-up period, Arthur Kay does not need to care too much about sales.

The company has signed contracts with a number of large coffee companies and waste management companies to recycle coffee grounds for fuel, which is then sold at considerable price. In the past, these companies had paid 64 pounds per tonne for landfill waste, and the shipping cost per tonne was 154 pounds. The emergence of “Bio-bean” company has saved these large customers a lot of money, and it is therefore recognized by the “Renewable Energy Association”.

The head of the British Electrical and Electronics Bureau's policy and foreign affairs department, James Coulter, said that for the UK renewable energy market, continuous innovation will continue to provide the most important solution to the various problems facing society. For example, the rethinking of waste disposal methods is very challenging in the low-carbon sector. The British government attaches great importance to this.

Arthur Kay said that his company has spent millions of dollars to develop this technology, and it is expensive to build factories, process chemicals, waste and energy products. The initial cost of the project's entrepreneurship comes from the bonuses of several science and technology challenges, angel investments, and loans. In the future, he hopes that his technology and business model can be applied to any country that drinks coffee, so that more people will realize the low-carbon advantages of coffee briquettes.
