"Utilizing carbon dioxide as an industrial raw material for mineralization and making various chemical products is a new strategy for reducing carbon dioxide emissions." The reporter learned that the so-called "carbon dioxide mineralization power generation" means that the chemical energy generated during the carbon dioxide mineralization process is directly converted into electricity.
At present, in the pilot experiment of the Xie Heping Academy academic group, the new CMFC carbon dioxide power generation method can stabilize the output power, with a maximum output power of 5.5 W/m2, which is higher than that of some bio-fuel cells by 0.01 to 0.530 W/m2. The maximum output voltage is 0.452 volts; at the same time, different concentrations of carbon dioxide can be directly generated by mineralization without the need for a carbon dioxide capture process.
Xie Heping said that in order to study whether carbon dioxide mineralized power generation CMFC can be directly applied to industrial solid wastes containing calcium hydroxide, the research team also directly used waste calcium carbide slag and kiln dust discharged from the plant as raw materials for experiments. The results show that both wastes can be directly used for carbon dioxide mineralization. The reactivity of calcium carbide slag is very close to that of analytically pure calcium hydroxide.
Xie Heping said that the research group has successfully implemented industrial alkaline wastes such as calcium carbide slag, organic waste alkali, cement dust, and steel slag, and used it as a raw material for carbon dioxide mineralization power generation to stabilize the output of electric energy and use carbon dioxide mineralization to generate electricity. At the same time, it also co-produced high value-added sodium bicarbonate chemicals. At the same time, it also dealt with industrial waste that harmed the environment, and formed a new approach to the use of carbon dioxide emissions reduction for environmentally-friendly, sustainable, circular economy development.
"However, at present, we have only confirmed the feasibility of CO2 mineralization power generation on a small scale. To further realize the industrial application of the technology, we need to do more basic research and technological research," said Xie Heping.
In the next step, the research group will further increase the power density and power output efficiency of CO2 mineralization power generation; according to the chemical properties of different minerals, explore the catalytic mechanism and activation method for CO2 mineralization power generation using different minerals; reveal the CO2 mineralization power generation process The various complex chemical reaction principles involved and their mechanisms.
In addition, in terms of technical research, the research team will optimize the parameters, manufacturing process, and precision of the CMFC technology and devices that implement carbon dioxide mineralization power generation; and implement pilot-scale research on carbon dioxide mineralization power generation as soon as possible.
