High-performance brake discs developed for the Shinkansen

Japan's Covalent Materials Inc. announced that it will launch advanced racing brake discs for sports cars in 2015, using ceramic-based composite materials consisting of silicon carbide (SiC), carbon fiber, and silicon (Si). It is planned to be sold as a replacement part for high-end sports cars by component manufacturers for the automotive aftermarket. This brake disc is characterized by a significant reduction in weight. In the future, the company will also promote the product to auto companies and strive to be used as original parts.

Covalent disclosed prototypes of automotive brake discs with a diameter of 400mm and a thickness of 40mm. The material was originally developed for use in the brakes of high-speed railway trains such as the Shinkansen. However, since the Shinkansen application takes a long time to confirm the reliability, the company decided to first put into practical use in the automotive field. The goal of the brake disc for Shinkansen is to reduce the weight by approximately 60% compared to the brake discs currently using iron-based materials.

Newly developed ceramic-based composites can withstand temperatures above 1000°C, and they can easily maintain braking performance even during repeated emergency braking. In the past, ceramic materials had problems such as being easily broken, and after this new material appeared cracks, carbon fibers would exert a crack arrest effect and would not be easily broken. However, in terms of price, it is much higher compared to iron brake discs.

Trial products, etc. are currently being exhibited at the NEDO booth at nanotech 2015 (International Nanotechnology Exhibition and Technical Conference). (Reporter: Takada Kenichi)

Stainless Steel Coiled Tubing

Used for a variety of circulation systems for different gases and fluids, coil tubes provide the ability for long length tube installations without the need for joining fittings. PAC Stainless stocks both welded and seamless coil tubes and can provide them in long mill lengths or cut-to-length in sections as short as fifty feet. These products have industry applicability for petrochemical, oil production heat tracing, geothermal and flow measurement applications.
