By chance, she and Hussein's projects could both use this method, so the two found a highly conductive graphene electrode with saliva bacteria attached to it. Within a week, these bacteria produced 1 microwatt (millions of One watt).
Although 1 microwatt looks trivial, it is enough to drive micro devices such as chips, diagnostic tools, or Mink's diabetes monitor. Hussein is now cooperating with a 3D-printed artificial organ company to embed his fuel cell into an artificial kidney and charge the battery with various body fluids. He said that this is only the first step of his ambitious goal.
