The Zhang Junyan research group of the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication of Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has recently developed a new environmentally friendly trivalent chromium plating process. At present, in the field of surface engineering, the process of electroplating chrome plating mostly adopts the highly toxic hexavalent chromium electroplating process, and the use of the traditional process can cause great harm to the natural environment in which humans depend and the health of electroplating workers. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has clearly stipulated that the hexavalent chromium plating production will be completely banned by 2010. The directives issued by the European Union (WEEE and ROHS) clearly stipulate that the use of hexavalent chromium for the surface treatment of automotive parts will be banned in the European Union from January 1, 2003. The technology is not mature enough until July this year. The EU's WEEE and ROHS directives also stipulate that the use of hexavalent chromium in electronic products will be banned throughout Europe from July 1, 2006. China's "Measures for the Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products" also clearly stipulates that the use of the hexavalent chromium process will be controlled from March 1, 2007. Compared with the traditional hexavalent chromium plating process, the electroplating process developed by Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics has made substantial improvements in terms of technology, laying the foundation for the industrial application of the new environmentally friendly plating process technology. The successful development and continuous improvement of the trivalent chromium plating process is expected to replace the traditional hexavalent chromium plating process. According to experts, the process of electroplating hard chrome plating of trivalent chromium has reached the international advanced level.
