ExxonMobil new materials: low energy consumption to separate ethylene from ethane

HC Plastics News: ExxonMobil and ITQ scientists have discovered a new material that is formed from a unique structure of silicalite that can be used in gas separation technology. As microporous materials, zeolites are commonly used for catalysis and adsorption in chemical processes. The use of ITQ-55 zeolite enables separation at ambient temperature with high selectivity. The results of the analysis can also be used to develop new materials that can be used as membranes or adsorbents in different gas separation applications in the manufacture of chemical products.

The new ITQ-55 material has the potential to selectively separate ethylene from ethane due to its unique flexibility and porous structure. The new material consists of a flexible large channel-connected heart-shaped unit that allows only flat ethylene molecules to pass through and circular ethane molecules to be blocked. Therefore, innovative materials function like a flexible molecular sieve.

It is reported that this material is a new potential and innovative material that can greatly reduce energy consumption and emissions in ethylene synthesis. The combination of this innovative material with other separation processes can reduce the energy required to separate ethylene by nearly 25% at current levels and reduce associated CO2 emissions.
