Question: I am a designer and a young entrepreneur. I have found a very common phenomenon, that is, most outstanding entrepreneurs in the world have problems in receiving formal education . What caused this? - Okasu Paul
Richard Branson: This is a very good question, and this is a question I often ask students around the world, because they will carefully consider whether to continue their studies before starting their own business venture. In addition, many people also want to know how to start their own career when I am a young student who is worried about my studies, and how I was seriously taken seriously by entrepreneurs.
Looking back, I believe that there are many factors that create an outstanding entrepreneur, such as unlimited energy, curious nature, and sometimes stubborn tendencies, but these are not the characteristics that often associate with the top students in the classroom. So it is not surprising that many of the world's leading entrepreneurs and business leaders have encountered some problems in formal education.
Often, the frustration they suffer in school is the result of “lack of patienceâ€: the desire of these talented people to leave the campus to set up their own company, which led them to drop out of high school or give up college studies. It is to follow your own dreams. For example, it is well known that Walt Disney dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to start his own animation company, while at the same time, the late American 19th century business tycoon Andrew Carnegie Cornelius Vanderbilt and Thomas Edison either received a little education before they officially began to explore their wealth, or they did not.
Some entrepreneurs, including 20th-century industrialists Carnegie and Henry Ford, are poor people. At the beginning of their business, their families can't help, and they all rely on self-study. Rather, they started their business at the beginning to support their families, but they finally succeeded.
More recently, retail entrepreneurs Philip Green and John Caudwell created their own wealth in the UK and established their own business after dropping out of high school. In the high-tech industry, Apple's Steve Jobs, Dell's founder Michael Dell, and Oracle's Larry Ellison are all from the university. The company that was founded after dropping out of school, and has already tasted the sweetness of entering the market early.
One thing that entrepreneurs have in common is the talent to look at issues from different angles. This allows them to identify important gaps in the market or new areas that meet specific customer needs. However, this ability often leads these up-and-coming entrepreneurs to resist traditional education.
My own experience is no exception, and I also mentioned in my previous column that I did not perform well during the student period. I was constantly rebelling against rules and authority, and I liked to challenge the "traditional" way of dealing with things. My curiosity always causes conflicts between me and my teacher.
But not only because of my dissent, but because I have dyslexia. When I was a young student, the academic community did not conduct extensive research on this learning disorder and was often misunderstood as lazy or poorly motivated. During the student days, everyone felt that I was not enterprising, but in fact I was trying to catch up. At the earliest, I released my youthful vitality into the sport, but after a certain injury, I started early entrepreneurship, but did not succeed.
However, my learning disabilities have never been a stumbling block. In fact, it has become a huge advantage in my business, because I can look at difficulties and challenges from different angles, which allows me to solve problems more clearly. For example, I have always hated industry terminology and lengthy plans. So earlier in Virgin , I asked some simple questions that others wouldn't ask. After a few years, asking simple questions and trying to find answers has become the most important feature of Virgin.
When I was a young student, my infinite energy and curiosity prompted me to start a student magazine when I was only 15 years old. The maintenance of this magazine is actually like participating in an entrepreneurship education course. I learned how to effectively build a team, sell ads, build content, and market products. Because I am my own boss, I never need to get the consent of others when trying new things, and if I do something wrong, I don't have to fear the anger from the top. After all, the willingness and failure to try new things is essential to becoming an entrepreneur, but making mistakes runs counter to the expectations of traditional education.
So for many years, learning has become my lifelong career. In about 50 years, Virgin has developed a variety of businesses, meaning that I have learned and have a good understanding of many areas, such as aviation, finance, media, hospitality and fitness, etc., I have only listed very few Part of it. Recently, my career has also given me interesting new perspectives on many major issues, such as climate change, conflict resolution and global health care.
Finally, methods for solving such big problems don't appear in the student tutorial, but you can go out, ask questions, look at the problem from different angles, and make yourself the discoverer of the answer.
