China's first fruit tree genome sequence map completed

The citrus research team led by Academician Deng Xiuxin of Huazhong Agricultural University has long been adhering to research on citrus germplasm resources and genetic improvement. In 2010, the team obtained pure double haploid material from pollen inducing culture. The pure material is the ideal material for genome sequencing, and it is also the key and foundation for Huazhong Agricultural University to complete the sequence mapping of this sweet orange genome.

The completed genome sequence map shows that there are 9 pairs of chromosomes in orange and the genome size is 367M. Genome annotation combines abundant gene expression data, including transcriptomes of callus, leaves, flowers, and fruits. By genetic markers and chromosome in situ hybridization analysis, Huazhong Nongda team integrated the orange genome sequence into 9 chromosomes. By comparison, the common genes of sweet orange, grape, and strawberry were 81% and 83%, respectively. Huazhong Nongda team also found that 51% of the genetic loci in the orange genome are heterozygous.
