The history of the development of China's tool coating industry

First, a different kind of memories

I remember in 1999 on behalf of a world-famous tool supplier G's participation in the Beijing Machine Tool Show. At the time, I was asked by the visitors the most questions: the first question was how the inner cold holes on the inner cold carbide twist drill were made; the second question was why some drill bits were golden yellow.

As I repeated over and over again, “The surface of the drill is golden yellow with TiN coating, and the purple-gray, dark gray is TiAlN coating, TiCN coating and some composite coatings. These coatings mainly improve the tool. Surface hardness, improved wear resistance, and thus improve the life of the tool." When I think, as a Chinese tool practitioner, we have a lot to do. Since then, I have been wondering how to develop the Chinese tool coating industry.

At that time, the Shanghai Tool Factory took the lead in purchasing the coating furnace of Balzers in Switzerland a few years ago. Some companies also purchased one or two foreign coating furnaces, but generally only serve their own businesses. In addition, the type of coating is no exception to the TiN coating, and no new coating varieties have been developed. Chengdu Tool Works successfully developed and sold some coating furnaces, which contributed to the development of China's tool coatings (especially the cultivation of coating talents)! However, the quality of the coating and the reliability of the equipment are not far from the international level.

In 2000, I was fortunate to set up a tool factory for G Company in China. A small coating furnace capable of coating TiN and TiAlN composite coatings was installed in the workshop. We began to accept the tool coating business as we promoted the basics of tool coating in the professional media. For a time, the interest of tool personnel in the industry has increased greatly, and it has played a role in “breaking the ice”. Due to the small capacity and high equipment cost, the coating price list we set at the time also made me dare not look at it now.

Second, the real rise in China's coating tool coating

rise in China's recent five-year thing, but with the efforts of Arnold tool are inseparable! In 2002, Arnold Tools was established in Suzhou Industrial Park. Because Arnault's main business at that time was the professional grinding of high-end knives, its target customers were high-end users in various domestic manufacturing industries. Most of these users use coated tools, so it is necessary to solve the problem of recoating after the tool is ground.

Coincidentally, I heard that Dr. Tang, who has been engaged in coating technology for a long time and is studying in Switzerland, intends to return to China to set up a coating center. After contacting, I met Dr. Tang very quickly at the Hongqiao Hotel in Shanghai, and specifically agreed on the process of accelerating the coating project and cooperation with Arnold. In July 2002, Shanghai Nano Coating and Suzhou Arnold Tools opened almost simultaneously. The professional outsourcing business of professional grinding and professional coatings began to rise in China!

Competition is an effective means to reduce costs, improve service quality, and improve the overall level of the industry. In order to reduce costs, shorten the delivery period of coatings, increase the type of coatings, etc., Arnold hopes that more international coating companies will set up factories in Suzhou to be the coating suppliers of Arno.

In the fall of 2002, Dr. Stefan Esser, the vice president of CemeCon Coatings, Germany's largest coating equipment manufacturer and coating service provider, came to my office. We talked about the future of China's tool industry and the future of tool coating. In the western restaurant on the beautiful Jinji Lake in the park, we chatted about the battle of the coated world while drinking fresh house brewed German beer. It is important to know that CemeCon's strategy at the time was to sell only coating equipment abroad, without the establishment of a coating service center, and the coating service center was only located in Germany. However, more than a year later, ComeCon established a coating service center in the same yard of Suzhou Industrial Park and Arno in March 2004 with the domestic listed company.

In the spring of 2003, I also communicated with the president of Balzers, hoping to invite Balzers to invest in China as soon as possible. The news that Balzers wanted to come to China to set up a coating center came out at least five years ago, but it has not been seen. After receiving my invitation, Mr. Anton Angehrn, Executive Vice President of the Tool Coating Division, met with me. The meeting took place at the office of Suzhou Arnold.

Mr. Angehrn told me that Balzers has always had plans to set up factories in China, but the time and place have not yet been determined. After receiving the invitation from Arnold, the board of directors attached great importance to speeding up the pace of setting up factories in China, so he was sent to China to implement the location as soon as possible. At that time, they had chosen Jiading in Shanghai, of course, mainly because of the Volkswagen and its supporting factories. Mr. Angehrn asked me at the time why Arnold chose Suzhou as its headquarters. After listening to my analysis, Mr. Angehrn changed his mind and was willing to go to the Suzhou Industrial Park to set up a coating plant to be the neighbor of Arnold.
