The first time in the world that the liquid oxygen coal-based space rocket kerosene rocket engine was used as a test engine

On the morning of the 12th, the world’s first hot-rocket test of rocket engine with liquid oxygen coal-based space-based kerosene was successfully completed in the pilot area of the Sixth Institute of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation located in the north of the Qinling Mountains. This is a key step for Shenhua coal-based fuels to move into space. China’s extremely scarce space-based fuels have thus added a rare strategic supply option.

Replacing conventional hydrazine fuels with high-efficiency, low-toxic liquid oxygen + kerosene is the development trend of the world's aerospace propulsion technology. In 2012, a new generation of high-thrust engines developed by the 6th Institute of Aerospace made China the second country in the world to master the core technology of high-pressure replenishment circulating liquid oxygen kerosene engines. China's independent intellectual property rights, Shenhua Group's Erdos million-ton coal direct liquefaction demonstration project is the world's first modern mature project verified by industrial scale installations. It has been operating safely and steadily since it was put into operation in 2010. The kerosene produced by "coal oil" has the characteristics of large specific gravity, high volume calorific value and high oxidation stability, and is a potential alternative fuel for aerospace kerosene.

In 2013, the Shenhua Coal-to-Liquid Oil Sector signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Aerospace Sixth Institute. The two sides conducted comprehensive technical cooperation and joint research and development on coal-based rocket kerosene and coal chemical special equipment and materials, and used space technology to research and develop coal. Key technical equipment such as pumps, valves, and power generation equipment in the chemical industry. So far, it has completed the basic research of coal-based aerospace kerosene trial production, physical and chemical properties, electrical heat transfer experimental research, material compatibility, and successfully used coal-based aerospace kerosene for two successful thermal test runs.

According to Liu Hongjun, an engine specialist of the Aerospace Sixth Hospital and a deputy chief designer of the new generation of launch vehicle, the various performance indicators of Shenhua-based coal-based aviation kerosene are equivalent to that of crude oil-based space-based kerosene, and they can completely replace the latter.
