Stanford University develops a new artifact that turns CO2 into treasure

According to Science News, Stanford University chemist Matthew Kanan and his colleagues have designed and manufactured an electrochemical cell that can absorb and utilize 84% of carbon monoxide and produce up to 29 % Ethylene gas. Previously, the gas produced by other battery technologies contained only about 12% ethylene. In another version of the battery, Kannan ’s team replaced the liquid electrolyte with a polymer film, which helped the battery produce a less diluted liquid product. The sodium acetate solution pumped by the battery is about 1,000 times higher than the concentration produced by other equipment. With its 1 cm wide cathode, the battery can produce a few milliliters of liquid in 24 hours.

Combining this technology with equipment that separates carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide helps to convert climate-change carbon dioxide into useful chemical raw materials. This can reduce the warming effect of carbon emissions and produce chemical supplies for manufacturing and space travel.
