Hong Kong Polytechnic University develops fourth-generation solar panels

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University will develop the fourth-generation nano solar panel in August. The thickness will not only be greatly reduced by 70%, but also the energy conversion efficiency will increase by more than one-third, providing better cooling for solar cars.

In 2009, Professor Zheng Jiawei of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University developed the first generation of solar-powered roof air-conditioning systems, which are trials of taxis and minibuses that reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per year.

However, the first-generation system, after absorbing enough sunlight for six hours, can only provide half an hour of air-conditioning and the results are unsatisfactory. The earliest test of the minibus driver pointed out that the system was often bad in the summer, resulting in a special heat inside the bus.

Zheng Jiawei pointed out that the system has continued to progress, and solar panels of the third generation have absorbed six hours of sunlight and provided up to six hours of air-conditioning after idling, which has greatly improved.

In the fourth generation of solar panels, nanotechnology was introduced to reduce the thickness by 70% to 1.5mm, and the new system improved the efficiency of sunlight to nearly 30%.
