According to foreign media reports, researchers at Aalto University in Finland noticed that if an artificial layer is applied to the electrode surface of the battery, the battery can be charged and can last longer. When the added artificial layer reacts and forms a protective SEI layer, electrode material can be saved. In addition, the artificial SEI surface is more uniform and higher quality than the naturally produced SEI layer.

Inorganic materials, that is, materials that do not contain carbon, are already used when depositing the atomic layer. Now, researchers at Aalto University use carbon dioxide to produce battery protective coatings for the first time. In the future, such coatings can extend battery life and make it possible to use more efficient new battery materials.

In addition to increasing battery durability, artificial SEI can also use more efficient new electrode materials. A battery is always composed of two electrodes, and each electrode has its own characteristics, which will affect the performance of the battery.

The researcher said: "If the battery can use metallic lithium as an electrode material, it will be a big benefit. If clean metallic lithium can be used safely, it will greatly increase the battery capacity. With the help of artificial SEI, it will be possible. Because If the battery is in contact with water or air, metallic lithium will ignite the battery, so using metallic lithium in a battery is very challenging."
