Egyptian scientists use graphene to invent new batteries

According to the Al Jazeera television station’s website on November 13, an Egyptian scientist has invented a method for manufacturing supercapacitors and batteries. Using this method, a battery made of graphene can be charged in a few seconds, and the power can continue to be very high. Long time. The scientist conducted his research at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Graphene is a new type of material with a two-dimensional network structure composed of carbon atoms. It has the characteristics of flexibility, high density, and high electron movement speed.

Masil Gaudi is a researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles and a research staff at Cairo University in Egypt. He said that when he studied practical methods for extracting graphene, he discovered many excellent properties of graphene. Because of these properties, supercapacitors made with graphene have more than twice the capacity of existing supercapacitors.

Supercapacitors are mainly used to store the energy generated by solar panels. China and the Netherlands have used supercapacitors in practical applications.

In the Netherlands, super-capacitors are installed in all the revolving doors of the train station. Each time the passenger uses the revolving door, the super-capacitor will store the generated electric energy and provide electricity when needed. In China, some buses have been equipped with super capacitors, which can be quickly charged using super capacitors to provide adequate power for vehicles.

Gaudi stressed that supercapacitors made with graphene have the "charging process takes only one second" feature, and this is based on the premise that the charging process has a response time of 30 milliseconds. In fact, the charging process of current supercapacitors takes about 90 seconds. At the same time, the capacitance is very small, only 7 to 8 microns thick, while the human hair has a diameter of 50 microns.

The Egyptian scientist said that graphene can be used to make batteries for smartphones, tablets and laptops. The average charge time for this battery is 30 seconds, and this short 30-second charge time allows the laptop to work for several days, and it also allows smart phones and tablets to work for several weeks.

He also pointed out that the graphene battery has flexibility and foldability; in addition, it is a non-toxic material and is harmless to the environment.

Gaudi said that his research results will appear in just a few years after the commercialization of products, and he has now chosen a company called Maxwell Technology for commercial production.

Gaudi’s innovation is a major shift in the battery and ultracapacitor industries. Compared with the computer and electronics industry, the battery and super capacitor industries have not yet achieved significant development, but the latter has played a huge role in the former. Therefore, Gaudi said that graphene-based batteries and capacitors will greatly promote the development of these industries.
