China Returns 1 Million Tons of U.S. Genetically Modified Maize
MIR162 GM corn staged in China "attack and defense"
Reporter Lin Yuan Beijing Report
Since October last year, China has returned millions of tons of imported corn from the United States because it has detected MIR162 genetically modified components that have not been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture. This has caused widespread concern. Due to a large amount of return shipments to the US agricultural industry, the United States has repeatedly urged China to complete its approval as soon as possible.
A number of experts recently said in an interview with reporters that at present, China's imports are basically genetically modified corn. Because the core technology of genetic modification has been grasped by large foreign multinational companies, long-term development may adversely affect the healthy development of China's agriculture. Therefore, it is necessary to be more cautious when the relevant department examines new genetically modified products.
Over one million tons of imported corn was "returned"
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine recently released data indicating that since the port of Shenzhen imported a U.S. corn from a ship in October 2013 and detected MIR162 genetically modified components that have not been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture of China, it has completed inspections and quarantines throughout the country on April 21, 2014. The agency detected a total of 1.12 million tons of imported U.S. corn and its products. The 1,121,000 tons of imported corn and its products, and port inspection and quarantine agencies have all returned shipments according to law.
MIR162 is a transgenic corn resistant to Lepidopteran insects developed by Syngenta and introduced into the maize genome a specific insect-resistant gene, Vip3A, against Lepidopteran insects from Bacillus thuringiensis by DNA recombination technology. . At present, MIR162 corn has been approved for planting in the United States, Argentina and Brazil, and passed the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for safety approval, but the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has not approved the introduction of this strain of genetically modified corn.
In March 2010, the manufacturer of MIR162 GM maize filed an entry application for GM maize MIR162 to China for the first time. It carried out environmental safety and food safety inspections in China and submitted it several times later, but related materials and experimental data were incomplete. , and there are problems. According to relevant persons from the Ministry of Agriculture, in November 2013, the company submitted another application for a safety certificate, and the relevant unit is currently in the process of review.
Dai Jingrui, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and corn genetics and breeding scientist, said in an interview with a reporter from the Economic Information Daily that foreign genetically modified products entering China must be approved by the National Agricultural Genetically Modified Organism Safety Committee before they can consider importing. If this process is not followed, It is illegal to import products without authorization through foreign trade. The committee will conduct a series of experiments on genetically modified products. The general situation will take at least six months.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) stated that the current import of genetically modified corn must first apply for import safety licenses for genetically modified products for processing raw materials from the Ministry of Agriculture. According to China's "Regulations on the Administration of Imports of Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms" and "Administrative Measures on the Inspection and Quarantine of Entry-Exit Genetically Modified Products", only genetically modified products approved by China (Ministry of Agriculture) for safety (including composite strains of genetically modified products) are subject to entry-exit inspection and quarantine. The system can only export to China after applying for inspection and handling related import procedures.
