[China Aluminum Network] Double Coat System: Pros and Cons
The double coating system means more paint on the surface of the substrate, increasing work time and costs. Whether it is worth depending on your choice, of course, the advantage is to improve performance and longevity.
In addition, if the primer is too thick, it will cause the paint to be unbalanced or the effect will be poor. If it is a transparent paint, it will cause the surface to appear milky. This will affect the appearance of the finish.
In professional applications, the use of a two-coat system is a simple way to enhance corrosion resistance, not to mention appearance and lifetime benefits.
Dual coating system coating process
Below, we have listed a series of suggestions for our powder technology for many years by our technical service team! As with any coating, experience is helpful, but some of them may be trial and error, so be sure to try it out!
1. Be sure to ensure good grounding. If not, you will face the problem of ionization back, which will make the coating rough, the surface is not so orange peel, more like the surface of grapefruit. This means that you need to clear the powder on the hook to ensure that the hook is in good contact with the painted part. The voltage between the workpiece and the ground should not exceed 500V. You can select an ohmmeter below $50 to monitor grounding at any time.
2. Test all products (self-produced or purchased) before painting the customer, so as to understand how all products work and make necessary adjustments before painting.
3. During pre-treatment, ensure that the surface of the substrate is properly cleaned and dried. Care should be taken not to allow the pre-treated substrate to dry at will. This can lead to water-stains. These water-stains can cause subsequent coatings to fail to achieve good protection. In the worst case, they can even cause foaming of the coating.
4. Many powder coatings can be used in a two-coat system, but this was not originally designed as such. In contrast, many products are not suitable for use in dual-coated systems. It is because of this, in the real world, which can be used and which cannot be done through practice and the wrong process. The same brand of powder coating is generally chosen to maintain the consistency of the coating. If a problem arises, consult the manufacturer.
5. Do not over-bake, which can cause adhesion problems between the two coatings.
6. Keep in mind that in a two-coat system, an overly thick primer can affect electrostatic spray and reduce the topcoat chalking, so a proper thickness is the key. Similarly, too thick a topcoat can also affect the effect, especially the transparent coating. The increase in thickness will affect the transparency. The thicker it is, the less clear it is. A film thickness gauge of a few hundred dollars can quickly detect the coating thickness.
7. To confirm the cure conditions for both coatings, are both low temperature cures, or one regular temperature cure, one low temperature cure? The actual construction plan must be determined according to the different curing conditions. For example, a conventional temperature-curing primer used with a low-temperature cured topcoat needs to ensure that the primer is fully cured before the topcoat is sprayed, as the primer will not fully cure if it is not done, affecting the coating performance.
8. Another common-sense problem is to ensure that the product is not contaminated, especially between the coating, dust, dirt, fingerprints will affect the performance of the final coating.
Dry On Dry
Dry-to-dry, or co-curing system, is a popular coating method in recent years. The pre-treatment is exactly the same as before. After the primer is applied, it is sprayed directly without curing and then cured.
The advantages and disadvantages of the co-curing system
The co-curing system of course has its own advantages, reducing the number of substrates entering and exiting the curing oven, reducing the risk of contamination resulting therefrom, and spending less time and effort in the curing process.
The disadvantage is that you can't mix any two powders together. Fortunately, it can work, but sometimes it can cause cracks in the coating surface.
Important note: Adjust the voltage of the two coats when spraying, and try what voltage is more suitable for your system.
to sum up
The double coating system is a great way to enhance and protect the substrate from corrosion, whether it comes from climate or wet finger contact. Some two-coat systems have been designed with powder coatings. Some of them happen to work together. Whether or not to use a two-coat system depends on the need for product coating performance.
