On August 10, 2016, local Audi company (Audi) disclosed a new type of “eROT system†(see figure) that can convert the up and down motion of a vehicle body caused by bumpy roads into electricity. The shock absorber system uses an electric shock absorber instead of the original hydraulic shock absorber to recover energy while attenuating the vibration. In addition, it is also possible to realize independent stroke control on the stretching side and the contraction side, which were originally difficult to achieve, through software settings. Audi said that the damping system is expected to improve fuel efficiency while ensuring ride comfort.
The eROT system consists of an alternator, a gear unit, and a lever arm that connects the gear unit with the hub carrier. In operation, the vertical movement from the hub carrier is first received by the lever arm and converted into rotational motion through the gear unit; the rotational motion is then converted into electricity using an alternator. The original hydraulic shock absorber converts vibration in the vertical direction into heat and discards it. This time, the shock absorber system can effectively use this energy.
Audi said that the road test carried out in Germany showed that 3W of electricity can be regenerated on a highway with good pavement conditions, 613W of electricity can be regenerated on rough roads, and an average of 100 to 150W of electricity can be regenerated. Based on this result, a maximum of 3 grams of CO2 per km can be reduced under normal driving operations. Audi envisages that the damping system supports a 48V system and uses regenerative power to charge a 48V power supply. The vehicle currently used for experiments is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 0.5 kWh and a maximum output power of 13 kW. In addition, the 48V auxiliary power system including the new system is connected to a 12V main power system through a DC converter.
Another feature of the eROT system is the active control of the suspension. Since the damper mechanism that dampens the vibration can be freely controlled by software settings, it is also expected to improve ride comfort. For example, by setting the software to reduce the stretch-side stroke of the vehicle body upward movement, and simultaneously increase the contraction-side stroke that easily influences the ride comfort, the swing of the vehicle body in the vertical direction can be reduced.
Audi believes that by arranging the electric shock absorber horizontally, it is possible to save space compared to the conventional system in which hydraulic shock absorbers are vertically arranged.
