British research and development of wireless sensors can be powered by rail vibration

Typically, train crossing staff use hardwired sensors to detect if a train has arrived. This also means that they must lay communication and power lines to activate traffic lights and fences. Now, however, researchers at the University of Huddersfield in the UK have developed a miniature wireless sensor that can be powered by rail vibration.

With the development of rail transit, a large number of trackside devices such as wireless sensors and RF coils have been applied to signal systems. Due to the lack of power in remote areas and the high cost of transmission, most of these trackside equipment are powered by batteries. This method not only increases maintenance costs, but also has the potential to pollute the environment.

British researchers deploy a large number of wireless sensors at each crossing, which can communicate with each other to form a wireless sensor network. When the researchers placed the sensor on the side of the rail, it was able to gain energy through rail vibration and use it to transmit signals. If one of the sensors fails, the network will be able to reacquire the surrounding warning signal.

The researchers said that installing such a system at each crossing would cost as much as £20,000. In contrast, traditional installation and inspection systems cost up to £50,000.
